Homeless Assistance
Hamshire-Fannett ISD is committed to ensuring every student has access to the support and resources they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. This page provides information for students and families seeking assistance with mental health, community resources, homelessness, foster care, and other support services available through the district and our community partners.
Whether your family is experiencing a temporary hardship, needs educational support, or is looking for community assistance, our district is here to help connect you with the appropriate resources. If you have questions or need additional assistance, please contact your child's campus or the district liaison listed below.
Students Who Are Homeless (All Grade Levels)
Parents and guardians are encouraged to notify the district if their child is experiencing homelessness. Hamshire-Fannett ISD staff can connect families with resources and services that may be available to help during this time. Families are also encouraged to visit their campus website for additional local community resources.

Educational Rights of Students Experiencing Homelessness
Students experiencing homelessness are provided flexibility regarding certain district requirements, including:

Proof of residency requirements

Immunization requirements
-
Educational program placement if previous academic records are unavailable or enrollment deadlines were missed due to homelessness

Credit-by-examination opportunities at any point during the school year, in accordance with State Board of Education (SBOE) rules

Evaluation of available academic records for transfer of credits earned at previous schools
-
Awarding partial credit when a student successfully completes one-half of a two-semester course
-
Eligibility requirements for participation in extracurricular activities

Graduation requirements
Under federal law, students experiencing homelessness have the right to remain enrolled in their school of origin or enroll in the school serving the attendance area where they are currently residing.
Students in grades 11 or 12 who transfer to another district and are unable to meet the receiving district's graduation requirements may request a diploma from their previous district if they meet that district's graduation criteria.
If a student or parent disagrees with the district's eligibility, school selection, or enrollment decision, they may appeal through district policy FNG (LOCAL). The district will expedite the local appeal process whenever possible to ensure a prompt resolution.
Foster Care Students
When children are unable to safely remain at home and an appropriate parent, relative, or close family friend is unavailable to provide care, a court may grant temporary legal custody to Child Protective Services (CPS). CPS may then place the child in foster care.
Students in foster care have the right to enroll in school and receive educational support to promote school stability and academic success.
